Reports out of Jets camp so far have been fairly positive when mentioning the name Christian Hackenberg, really? Yes.. really. Hackenberg the first two days of camp demonstrated poise in the pocket and was delivering the ball on the mark with authority. Yes, it is only the third day of training camp, yes this still is Hackenberg we’re talking about here but any optimism on consecutive days is always a good thing. As for the first day in pads, when things begin to heat up, Hackenberg continued to deliver closing the gap slowly but surely on Josh McCown who is not doing himself any favors with his own performance (11 of 16 in just 22 reps).
Hackenberg today was second man up, the same rotation it has been throughout this entire offseason. Notching just as many reps as McCown, Hackenberg was relegated to reps with only the second team. Hackenberg seems to be more conscious of ball security as he has not thrown an interception yet (the hoax is on), turning in a productive 9 of 15 with two balls that were catchable but dropped. These are far from perfect practices for Christian as he at times still shows a tendency of holding onto the ball for too long resulting in what would be sacks. If that is going to be the issue surrounding him this summer throughout training camp and preseason I will most certainly sign up for that, as there are many other things he has been criticized for that could be continuing to hinder him.
I am a fan of Christian Hackenberg and would love nothing more then to see him come out and have success in John Morton’s West Coast offense. He has the strongest arm of the quarterbacks on this roster and the size you dream of when envisioning an NFL quarterback coming out of college. Coach Bates took some time away from the game to clear his mind and grow as a person outside of football, hopefully his re focused attitude will help Hackenberg continue to develop and start building off these consistent practices he is having.
