The Jets took on the New Orleans Saints this past Saturday in their week 3 preseason matchup. The Jets dropped this game 28-13, showing many highs and lows throughout the game.
1. The Jets starting defense looked pretty well but were again faced with the reality that their cornerback situation is weak as well as their pass rush. It still blows my mind that Mike Maccagnan continuously whiffed at both positions over the course of his tenure, but we won’t go down that road. I do envision Joe Douglas bringing him multiple new bodies and several different positions once cuts begin for other teams, with these two positions atop the list.
2. Sam Darnold played – OK. He was faced with some consistent pressure throughout his appearance, he hasn’t had his starting offensive line in front of him for the past two weeks now. On the plays he had a clean pocket Darnold made quick crisp reads and protected the football. He finished the night 8/13 for 97 yards and 1 touchdown, a beautiful touch pass to Ty Montgomery from inside the 5.
3. Taylor Bertolet has settled into his kicking role after being signed a few weeks ago. This was his best performance going 2/2 on field goals with his longest from 56 yards, pretty impressive. He also drilled one extra point to bring his kicking total for Saturday to 3/3. I do anticipate the Jets to search for a veteran to come in and assume kicking responsibilities this season, but Bertolet is giving his best shot to change their minds and stick around. We’ll see.
