The Jets kicked off their roster cut downs with a pair of moves this afternoon, starting with the release of former 6th round pick in 2017 – Elijah McGuire. Another Mike Maccagnan draft pick has been released, a continuous theme we’re seeing when it comes to his players he drafted. I didn’t mind McGuire, I thought he played his best game last year against the Packers and was hopeful he would carry that into the 2019 season. But once the Jets signed running backs Leveon Bell, Ty Montgomery and brought Bilal Powell back I knew it was going to be an uphill battle for McGuire to make this roster. It also doesn’t help that Trenton Cannon continued to perform as a gunner on special teams, using his speed to make as much of an impact as he could. Eli McGuire will find work in this league with another team shortly as he will be a serviceable back for a team that struggles with running back depth.
Also today the Jets have signed former Colts safety Matthias Farley who was waived earlier this week. In three seasons with the Colts he has played in 37 games (16 starts), totally 3 interceptions, 118 combined tackles and 73 solo. Farley a well respected player within the Colts organization will bring a veteran presence to this secondary that is much needed.
We will continue to see Joe Douglas attack this portion of the offseason this weekend, trying to round out the roster as best he can before heading into week 1 next weekend verse the Bills.
